The Story of the Pencil

(From Paulo Coelho’s Like the Flowing River)

A boy was watching his grandmother write a letter. At one point, he asked:
“Are you writing a story about what we’ve done? Is it a story about me?”

His grandmother stopped writing her letter and said to her grandson:
“I am writing about you, actually, but more important than the words is the pencil I’m using. I hope you will be like this pencil when you grow up.”

Intrigued, the boy looked at the pencil. It didn’t seem very special.
“But if it’s just like any other pencil I’ve ever seen!”

That depends on how you look at things. It has five qualities which, if you manage to hang on to them, will make you a person who is always at peace with the world.

“First quality: you are capable of great things, but you must never forget that there is a hand guiding your steps. We call that hand God, and He always guides us according to His will.

Second quality: now and then, I have to stop writing and use a sharpener. That makes the pencil suffer a little, but afterwards, he’s much sharper. So you, too, must learn to bear certain pains and sorrows, because they will make you a better person.

Third quality: the pencil always allows us to use an eraser to rub out any mistakes. This means that correcting something we did is not necessarily a bad thing; it helps to keep us on the road to justice.

Fourth quality: what really matters in a pencil is not its wooden exterior, but the graphite inside. So always pay attention to what is happening inside you.

Finally, the pencil’s fifth quality: it always leaves a mark. In just the same way, you should know that everything you do in life will leave a mark, so try to be conscious of that in your every action.”

Love Actually

It’s Christmas time again, I can't help but be reminded of this movie. I believe it has captured the essence of Christmas.

It’s LOVE, actually.
(MY FAVORITE PART!)
Jamie: It's my favorite time of day, driving you.
Aurelia: [in Portuguese] It is the saddest part of my day, leaving you.

(2nd Favorite)

Jamie: Beautiful Aurelia, I've come here with a view of asking you to marriage me. I know I seems an insane person - because I hardly knows you - but sometimes things are so transparency, they don't need evidential proof. And I will inhabit here, or you can inhabit with me in England.

Prime Minister: [on the phone to his sister] I'm very busy and important. How can I help you?”

Harry: Christmas shopping, never an easy or a pleasant task.

Sam: But you know the thing about romance is people only get together right at the very end.

Daniel: Tell her that you love her.
Sam: No way. Anyway, they fly tonight.
Daniel: Even better! Sam, you've got nothin' to lose, and you'll always regret it if you don't.

Karen: True love lasts a lifetime.

Karl: Life is full of interruptions and complications.

Colin: I'm on Shag Highway heading West.

Billy Mack: Christmas is a time for people with someone they love in their lives.

Daniel: You've seen the films, kiddo. It ain't over 'til it's over.

Colin: American girls would seriously dig me with my cute British accent.

Sam: Let's go get the shit kicked out of us by love.

Colin: I am Colin. God of Sex. I'm just on the wrong continent, that's all.

The President: I'll give you anything you ask for - as long as it's not something I don't want to give.

Mia: It's an art gallery, full of dark corners, for doing... dark deeds.

Billy Mack: It's a terrible, terrible mistake, Chubs, but you turn out to be the fucking love of my life. And to be honest, despite all my complaining, we have had a wonderful life.

Aurelia: [in Portguese] I will miss you. And your very slow typing... and your very bad driving.

[on sheets of poster board]

Mark: But for now, let me say - Without hope or agenda - Just because it's Christmas - And at Christmas you tell the truth - To me, you are perfect - And my wasted heart will love you - Until you look like this [picture of a mummy]

Mark: Merry Christmas

I feel it in my fingers, I feel it in my toes.

Christmas is all around me and so the feeling grows...

Great Un-expectations

It was 11:00 PM and the group just got home to do a quick (meaning 5 minute) rest and head out again to experience night life in Singapore.

Our luck, or the lack thereof, started when we checked out the website of the best bar in the country and learned that it is closed during Sundays (yes, we were going out on a Sunday night since we were toooo tired the past days, thanks to the zoos). We just hoped there were a lot of other foreigners like us who were in a party mood.

Then we finally found another club to go to, but just when we were about to go, it rained…hard. Normal rain in Singapore is just a 5-10 minute drizzle; but this rain has been pouring for hours already, complete with the roaring thunder and blinding lightning package.

Still… we wanted to go. Scrap the train. We’ll ride a cab to go to the club (even if it would cost us 4 times more).

After running with your stilettos on, under the pouring rain, we got to the bus stop and found a taxi waiting. Wooohoo! We got in a cab and told ‘Uncle’ to bring us to Power Station (a power plant converted into bar/clubs). Just our luck (again), someone left their (nice nice nice Samsung) phone in the taxi! I told my brother that God is just testing us. So we gave the phone to the driver and the owner called eventually (the phone will be delivered to the owner later that morning . I wish we could do that in Manila!!!).

Okay, party mode… party mode.

We got to the bar at 12:40 AM. We went ahead looking for this R&B club called Powerhouse, and finally found the entrance with a huge sign “CLUB IS TEMPORARILY CLOSED FOR A PRIVATE FUNCTION.” Wooohooo! Hahaha!

Beside it is a ‘bouncing’ club but with Latin-Lambada-Salsa sounding music. Everyone looked happy (and older) but what the heck! We didn’t have a choice. Just when we were about to enter, the guard told us the allowed age: Women – 18 yrs and up; Men – 23 yrs and up. What’s up with that?!?! Hahaha! Is that proof that women mature 5 yrs faster than men? Hahaha! Anyhow, we can’t get it. My brother is just 21. :P

Okay, party mode? Still in party mode?

Yes, we were desperate. We waited for a while and found a taxi. We’ll just go to this other place (This time, Chimes – A monastery which was turned into a bar/club/restaurant complex!). Just seconds, literally, 2 seconds after we rode the taxi and closed the taxi door… the Powerhouse club went open for public. Hahahaha. Again, just our luck!

A minute in the taxi ride going to Chimes, my brother found a cellphone beside his seat. Oh yes! Somebody left their cellphone in the taxi again!!! Another nice, Nokia cellphone this time. Again, I told my brother ‘God is just testing you, since you are still tempted to get it. Give it to Uncle driver.’ So he did. He’ll just drop it off to the owner later.

Hmm… still in party mode? I guess.

Still under heavy rain, we reached Chimes. It looked like ghost town! We do hear that faint music from the background. We followed the sound and reached Insomnia bar. Just when we were about to get in, the guard asked for our IDs. Again, 18 for women and 23 for men. Hehehe. The guard probably saw how wet and desperate looking we were that after looking at our IDs he said ‘Ok, I’ll let you in just this once.’ We said our thank you’s and explained we were just visiting blah blah blah.

Finally, we were in the club! Beyonce was playing followed by Nelly Furtado… Timbaland… JT… then the music stopped. It was time for the band to play. Uhm, I have watched this vocalist before (the last time I went to Insomnia), only this time he had every band member different. Then they started playing…Greenday’s When I Come Around’ followed by Lenny Kravitz’ Are You Gonna Go My Way. Oh shoot! This is a rock party! Bwahahaha!

Instead of singing ‘To the left, to the left. Everything you own in a box to the left’ we ended up with ‘Exit light Enter night Take my hand Off to never never land!’ Hahahaha!

'The band'
I don't know what the lead guitarist wanted to prove, he had to
have his own electric fan blowing off his ill-rebonded long hair the whole time.

I was fine with their play list (followed by Guns n Roses, Foo Fighters, etc), I was actually having fun. Then I remembered, these were songs way back in my high school! Which means, the band was playing songs when my brother and his girlfriend were still in Grade 1! HAHAHAHA!

Me and Drei with Mr. Vocalist
Thanks to some drunk white guys and the rowdy band, we were all entertained nevertheless. Watching people bounce, run, jump from chairs, tables, bars, crawl, do dolphin dives, and yes, even the vocalist was making cartwheels while singing… we were definitely entertained.

The Pinoy Band
We decided to go home around 2:30 AM, just when this pinoy band started to play. Their sound was Aegis-doing-Tina-Turner-songs. So sorry though, you didn’t make me proud. Tsk.
